How to File for Divorce in San Francisco County

San Francisco County Courthouse Location

The United Family Court hears family law cases. Your uncontested divorce petition can be filed at this courthouse. The UFC is located at 400 McAllister St. San Francisco, CA 94102. The clerk’s office is open from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday excluding court holidays. 

San Francisco Divorce Residency Requirements

You must meet California’s divorce residency requirements in order to terminate your marital status. This requires you or your spouse to be a resident of California for at least six-months before filling your petition of dissolution with the local court (in addition to being a resident of the county court in which you file for at least 3-months prior). You can file for legal separation if you do not meet the residency requirements.

San Francisco County Divorce Process

Complete the forms referenced above (make two copies) and file them with the court. You will need to serve the filed forms on the opposing party. You will need to make sure the opposing party is also served with your financial disclosure. This requires you to complete the following forms:

Hire a process server or have someone over the age of 18 who is not a party to the action serve the opposing party with the divorce documents. The respondent will have 30-days to respond to the dissolution of marriage petition and sixty days from serving you with the response to provide a preliminary financial disclsoure.
